Taking a Road Trip

deciding_rv_road_tripWant an adventure?  Then take a road trip!  There are several advantages to taking a road trip, although there are several concerns, as well, such as making certain you don’t run out of petrol and don’t suffer any major vehicle break downs.  However, despite these issues, the advantages of a road trip far outweigh them. The first advantage is that it’s flexible.  If you have the time to drive to your holiday destination, you may be able to take the time to stop along the way.  If you see an attraction or other location you want to visit while driving, you can stop and check it out.  Of course, you have to be careful not to stop too many times or else you may find yourself arriving at your destination later than you want to. Another option is that you can pack more.  With airlines, bus lines, and trains, you have a limited amount of luggage you can take, plus you have to pay for your checked baggage.  If you take a car, however, you can take as many bags as you can fit in the boot or back seat (depending on how many people are on the trip with you).  This also means you can buy more souvenirs and purchase larger items. You also won’t have to rent a car when you arrive.  While you may not have planned on renting a car, having your own will still have you some money.  You won’t have to pay for public transportation.  Of course, petrol is still an issue. If you really want to see the countryside, several different cities, and more, a road trip is exactly what you want.  It gives you a lot more freedom than other forms of transportation, although it may take longer.  However, for those who have the time, a road trip can provide a great holiday.

Eating out While on Holiday

profile_1Unless you have unlimited financial sources, chances are your holidays will have a fixed budget.  This means you’re going to have to shop around for the best hotel deals, the best transportation deals, and watch how much money you spend on souvenirs, events, and food.  One way many people try to cut spending is by avoiding eating at expensive restaurants while travelling.

One way of doing this is to rely on non-perishable foods.  You can purchase crackers, bagels, doughnuts, bread, cereal, muffins, and other foods from a supermarket once you arrive at your hotel.  Yes, you’re still spending money, but these items are usually much cheaper than eating out.  Generally, these foods take the place of eating breakfast out, although you can always have a bagel or a piece of fruit for lunch.  You can also eat these foods for snacks instead of purchasing candy out of the vending machine.

Some hotels offer a free continental breakfast.  If you’re staying at one of these hotels, you won’t have to worry about eating out.  These breakfasts usually aren’t anything extraordinary—most of them feature bagels, cereal, toast, and fruit instead of hot food.

Eating fast food is also an option.  Fast food is usually fairly cheap, but it’s not the healthiest choice.  However, it is a complete meal, and it will fit in your budget.  Often, fast food is a good lunch choice.  Many people eat their non-perishable, store-bought groceries for breakfast, visit a fast food place for lunch, and then go to a nice restaurant for dinner.  This isn’t a bad plan, actually.  You should allow yourself to visit nice restaurants while on your luxury holidays.  Part of visiting a different location, after all, is trying new foods.  Let yourself sample the local cuisine.  Just don’t get carried away—you may want to skip the appetizer, dessert, or alcoholic beverage as a way of staying within your budget.

Dealing with Cancelling Your Holiday

It’s one of the most disappointing things, but sometimes real life gets in the way of your holiday.  When that happens, you may have to cancel your holiday.  There are several things you need to consider, however, before you cancel your trip.
You need to know what the cancellation policies are on anything you’ve booked.  Generally, if you cancel early enough, you’ll be able to get a or bus tickets.  With cruises, however, you may not get back all of your deposit.  Likewise, you can generally cancel your hotel reservations as long as you do so 48 hours before your check-in time.  However, some hotels have different policies, as do different airlines and bus lines.  Always take note of cancellation policies so you know when you can cancel without losing your money.

If you find out that you can’t get most of your money back, you have a few options.  The first is that you can take the hit and lose your deposits.  If this is the case, however, you should ask about transferring your registrations and such to someone else.  If you have a friend or family member who lives in the area you were visiting, you may be able to give them any event tickets you have so at least someone will get to use them.  With transportation or lodging, you might not be able to transfer the ticket.

If it’s at all possible, you may even want to try to take your holiday or at least part of your holiday anyway.  You might be able to shift your travel and lodging dates without losing all of your investment.  If not, however, you should try to make certain either you get at least some of your money back or can transfer your investments to someone else.

Research Before You Pack

Imagine yourself taking the holiday of your dreams.  Now imagine yourself freezing because you didn’t pack heavy clothing or finding the perfect swimming location only to realise you didn’t pack your bathing suit.  While not having the right clothing may not ruin your holiday, it can be an annoyance.  Before you pack for your holiday, here are a few things you may want to research.

The weather.  Never assume that a tropical island is always going to be warm or that a trip to a northern country will always require heavy clothing.  Years ago, it might have been difficult to get a weather forecast for other parts of the world, but with the internet, you can easily find current weather conditions.  Check for rain, freak warm/cold spells, and other factors before you leave for your holiday to ensure that you have the correct clothing.

Airline/ship regulations.  If you’re flying or taking a boat, you should check the current bag size and weight limits before packing.  You never know when a company is going to change their regulations.  The last thing you want is to be stuck in an airport with bags that are too big or too heavy to get to your destination or to get home.

Hotel amenities.  While you may not be going somewhere to swim, you may want to take a dip in the hotel pool if one is available.  Likewise, if you exercise daily, see if the hotel has a gym so you know if you need your workout clothes or not.  Knowing what amenities will be in the room itself is also a good idea, especially when planning a trip budget.  If you have access to a microwave and mini-fridge, for example, you may want to pick up a few things from a local grocery store instead of eating out the entire time.

Your Souvenir List.  While this doesn’t require doing any real research, it’s a good idea to have a list of people you plan on buying souvenirs for before you start packing.  If you have a long gift list, you may need to take an empty bag or pack lightly so that you have enough space to get all of your new purchases home.  Most likely, you’ll end up buying more than you expected, so factor that into your spare bag space as well.

As you can see, doing a bit of thinking and research before you leave for your holiday will make certain you pack everything you need and have the space to bring back souvenirs of your amazing trip.
