London Travel Guide

Once upon a time London was supposed to be the capital of the world. A visit to London is worth all the efforts. You will never have a boring moment there. Let us look into some of the places which always attracted tourists.

Buckingham Palace is the residence of the oldest, existing monarchy in the world. It has about 700 rooms. During the summer season visitors are allowed to see a few of these rooms for a price. It was built by the Duke of Buckingham in the early eighteenth century as his own residence. But the British Royalty made the place its own residence by the middle of the nineteenth century.

Westminster Abbey is another place to see in London. Kings and Queens of England are crowned there. Almost all the Monarchs and many famous people were buried here. Even Oliver Cromwell who abolished the institution of monarchy in England was also buried here at first. But after a short time his body was exhumed and buried elsewhere.

The Tower of London is a place where the Crown Jewels are stored and guarded. It is a massive fort where once the monarch lived. It was built by William the Conqueror in the latter half of the seventeenth century. This big fort was once used as a prison whose methods of torture were infamous. It was used as a hanging place for foes of the Crown.

Hyde Park is a very interesting place in London. This beautiful place covers a vast area. There anybody in the world can express his/her opinion without fear. Some such speakers may get listeners too.

The British Museum was built two and a half centuries ago by King George II. It can be called the record of history of the human race and the planet. It has collections from all over the world. The history of ancient civilizations is documented and exhibited there. Objects, numbering in millions from all the continents assembled there are priceless. For those who are interested in natural history cannot miss this place.

Trafalgar Square was built in memory of the sea battle of Trafalgar against the French and the Spanish. The battle took place in 1805. Even though the British commander of the fleet Admiral Nelson was killed in the battle the British won it. The Admiral was mainly responsible for the victory. A thankful nation built a memorial to the hero and the battle. The famous Nelson column and beautiful fountains can be seen there. This place is considered to be the centre of London.

The Houses of Parliament are situated near Westminster Abbey. The British Parliament is called the mother of all parliaments. Many countries all over the world have adopted the British Parliament as their model. It is really worth a visit. Big Ben is also nearby.

Memories of Boston

No trip to the USA will be complete until and unless one visits Boston. This city, along with its rich and diversified history has lots in store for the tourists. Also referred to as the birthplace of freedom, this city is chock full of destinations that are both fun and educational. While one can find tourist buses in this city, it is strongly recommended that one travel on the general transport system of the city to know the same in full. When one takes a tourist bus, they are limited to the time they can spend in a particular space and cannot make their stay in these places fruitful. There are many spots that require the visitor’s presence for quite a number of hours; hence it is best if you opt in to travel in the local transportation system.

The city of Boston has different climates throughout the year and can be extremely chilling during the winter. Tourists from tropical climates are recommended to study the climate charts available with the tourist department or on the web before they plan their trip to Boston. Those who have not delved into the history of Boston should be aware that this city had played a major part during the Revolutionary War. Hence the name `The Freedom Trail‘ given to a 2.5 mile long and red colored line which connects most of the important and historical spots. The trail of this red line begins at The Greater Boston Convention and Visitor Center.

The tourists can either take part in guide led tours or if they so want, they can follow the trails by themselves. Most of the guides that lead the tour on this trail are dressed up in historical costumes. There are many historical things that one can find in this trail and they include the Boston Common that is one of the oldest of US public parks. Apart from that one can also find the Black Heritage Trail, the State House, the Park Street Church, King’s Chapel & Burying Ground, Benjamin Franklin’s Statue and the Granary Burying Ground. The last named is the burying ground where the bodies of famous figures like John Hancock and Paul Revere lie.

If one proceeds a bit further, they can find the Old State House where the Boston Massacre had taken place and which was once the seat of the British Government. One can also find other famous spots like the Old South Meeting House and the Old Corner Bookstore building. If you are interested to take part in a bit of nostalgia, check out the Boston Duck Tour. Real amphibious landing machines from World War II are used to conduct these tours and these tours take passengers along the major attractions of Boston and end up splashing into the Charles River. There are many more tourist attractions in the city of Boston like the Boston Public Garden and the Red Sox Park, which is one of the oldest parks of the Major League.

Oslo Travel Guide

The capital of Norway, Oslo has a rich history - dating back over a thousand years. The city was burnt down in 1624, was shifted westwards and renamed Christiania. The name stuck until 1925, when it was renamed back to Oslo. Encompassing fifteen boroughs, Oslo happens to be counted among the largest capitals, area wise, in the world. Oslo enjoys a temperate climate due to the warm winds coming in from the Gulf Stream - snow is prevalent in winter, thus winter sports are quite the rage in the city. Over twenty per cent of the population in the city is comprised of foreigners, making it Norway’s melting pot.

Coming to the question of travelling within the city, the solution is provided by the city’s comprehensive public transport system, which is made up of buses, a metro, trams, trains and boats. For the passenger’s convenience, for all these modes of public transport, the same ticket is valid. The metro, in particular, is among the best in Europe and goes by the name of Tunnelbane or just T-bane. The city also has a public bike service, which is quite convenient and inexpensive. Hiring a taxi in the city is a little expensive, but they are extremely comfortable.

The architecture of Oslo is beautiful and every visitor must take a look at the splendid buildings in the city - starting with the Opera house - a monument to modern architecture. Tourists can also visit the Royal Palace, University of Oslo, Oslo Cathedral, Oslo’s City Hall and Kirkeristen (an old bazaar). You cannot miss the castle of Akershus Festning and Holmenkollen, the ski jump. You can also take a guided tour of the Norwegian Parliament or Stortinget for free. The city also has museums and parks which are worth a visit.

There are certain wooden housing areas of Oslo which have to be on the must-see list of all connoisseurs of old houses. Fresh water swimming in Oslo is also very popular. If you are looking to shop in Oslo, there’s a lot to choose from but Oslo was ranked in 2006 as the sixth most expensive city in the world to live (and hence) shop in. Apart from malls in the city there are plenty of other shops. Likewise for food, there are both expensive as well as cheap places in the city. The hotdog from Oslo is a must-have - also called kjempegrill. The nightlife is quite lavish and smoking is not allowed in all of the city’s pubs, bars and restaurants.

Oslo is worth a visit, followed by a trip to the city’s surrounding serene countryside.

Edinburgh - A Travel guide

“Auld Reekie” as Edinburgh is fondly called puts forward an awesome blend of ancient and modern. Designated the most liveable city in the UK, the capital of Scotland offers much for the enthusiastic tourist. Case in point, the term “Panorama” was originally coined by painter Robert Barker in order to offer a description to his paintings of Edinburgh! A multi cultural potboiler overlooking the enormous Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is possibly the only city where you will find 21st century nightclubs tucked into 15th century buildings! So, if you are a tourist looking for a destination that offers fascinating experiences, pack your bags and set off for Ye Olde Scotland!

Edinburgh is best visited between May and September every year, when the climate is mild and the evenings are long. Also it will mean that you’ll be able to experience the famous Edinburgh festival first hand. Edinburgh is reachable by flights from major European cities like London, Amsterdam, Paris and from major centers across USA and Canada. If you are travelling from elsewhere in the UK consider the Bus service as an inexpensive alternative. The New Edinburgh Train station also has international train services.

Once you set foot, you can either head for Bread and Breakfast hostels as inexpensive options or look higher up the food chain for Edinburgh hotels and lodges. After checking in, you can go around the city via the efficient bus service though it is always more recommended to rent a bicycle (Edinburgh has an excellent network of signed bike tracks) or just going around by foot to explore every nook and cranny of the city. Since the city isn’t hugely expansive but is filled with narrow lanes and cobblestoned bylanes, the latter options are actually better.

Places to visit obviously begins with the Edinburgh Castle dominating the skyline, perched on a volcanic crag near the middle of the city. It is linked to the Palace of Holyroodhouse by The Royal Mile, often called the spine of the city. Most places to visit in Edinburgh fall within the localities of the Old Town, crowded with serpentine lanes and old buildings, and the newer 19th Century New Town, planned and orderly, with its Georgian buildings. If you are a shopping maniac try local woolens at Princes St. If you like to be more scholarly in you approach, you can opt for a lazy day strolling around the Museum of Scotland, filled to the brim with fascinating exhibits, or maybe the second-hand bookshops along the West Port. Along the harbor area there are a great number of bars and pubs making them great places to meet friends and socialize. But beware, if you arrive during the annual Edinburgh festival, the city is extremely crowded and prior reservations may be necessary to ensure a smooth trip.

The Scottish food, ranging from seafood to local country cuisine, comes mostly from the erstwhile working class and are great to taste, generous in portions and relatively light on the wallet. With numerous bars and pubs dotting the cityscape to wash down your excellent meal, the end of a day in Edinburgh is sure to leave you grinning widely.

Barcelona - A Travel guide

Holding forward an amazing juxtaposition of old and new within its cosmopolitan confines, Barcelona, today, is a modern European city that you cannot afford to miss. It is one city which hosts the warmth of the Catalans, the artistic heritage of Picasso and Miro, the fascinating remains of its Roman past and glimpses of its ultra modern future. Filled to the brim with a kaleidoscope of sites and experiences Barcelona has emerged as one of the favorite tourist destinations of modern Europe.

Located the Mediterranean sea front, between the Llobregat and Besos rivers , Barcelona’s history dates back to the 3rd century BC, with sieges by Romans, Goths as well as the Moors. Today extensive Roman ruins are to be found across the city as reminders to its past.

As a tourist, there is just so much to do and see in Barcelona that a certain amount of planning maybe necessary if you do not want to miss some of the experiences. Barcelona is reachable by flights from all major cities of the world. Once you touchdown there are a wide variety of hotels in Barcelona, from the prohibitively expensive to the pocket friendly. Interestingly there are other options to go for as well. Young single people can stay in youth hostels which are dirt cheap and offer basic accommodation. For those with groups of three or more Holiday apartments can be an interesting as well as cheap option as well as the relatively newer concept of Aparthotels i.e. apartments within hotels.

Once you are settled with your accommodation, Barcelona offers a plethora of tourist spots to visit. The breathtaking and yet unfinished Sagrada Familia Church, designed by the famous Antoni Gaudi whose construction has been going on since 1882 is on top of the list. Then there is the Barcelona Cathedral, the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter) with its Roman remains and old gothic architecture, the 1992 Olympic village, Modernist architectural sites scattered throughout the city, the haunts of Pablo Picasso (like the Els Quatre Cats Cafe), a selection of museums on art, archaeology and the like. The Barcelona center has a host of tourist spots, all situated a stone’s throw away from each other. But the most famous tour of all is undoubtedly that of the Barcelona FC club, which is booked months in advance.

Touring Barcelona throws up interesting options including a hop on hop off bus tour which covers all major tourist destinations. If you like to take things easy you can take various walking tours available. But for the best of both worlds, we recommend you rent a cycle and travel through the city. It is a unique experience.

Since Barcelona grew up with its back to the sea, the beaches in Barcelona are relatively new and not as strong a tourist attraction, being mostly reclaimed from demolished industrial sites.

Lastly, Barcelona plays host to a variety of cuisines from all over the world, topped by the excellent Catalan cuisine which is a gastronomical delight. Go to out-of-the-way local restaurants and you’ll experience gastronomic heaven, the perfect icing on a surely unforgettable tour.

Berlin Travel Guide

The capital city of Germany with a population of around 3-4 million, Berlin is well known for its historic relevance, its rocking nightlife with clubs, cafes, bars and restaurants, and other places of interest such as museums. The architecture of the city shows the gradual process of reconstruction which has taken place in the last half of the century - you can observe the different styles in architecture ranging from the last of the remaining medieval buildings to the newly constructed ultra-modern high rise buildings made of glass and steel. Berlin consists of twelve districts or boroughs (which go by the name of Bezirke).

The average age of the people of Berlin is low in comparison to other European cities and thus Berlin can be said to be classed as a ‘young city’. Although certain traces of the old East and West Berlin rivalry still linger, with each passing generation the biases are getting weeded out. The people are quite helpful and friendly, and ever since the football world cup in 2006, the staff of all public transport systems should be able to help you out in English. As Berlin is a large city, you would do well to carry a map with you. Also the public transport services of the underground, bus, tram and train are highly effective. You could also hail a taxi or rent a bicycle, the latter bolstered by the many bicycle paths strewn across the city. Most Berlin Hotels will be able to help you find a reputable place to rent a bike. Walking tours are also pretty popular.

The sights and sounds of Berlin which attract tourists include its vast array of museums, art galleries, zoos and churches. A feature particular to Berlin’s high rise buildings and monuments is that many of them have observation decks - for instance, the TV Tower near Alexanderplatz is pretty much worth a visit. A prerequisite stop for a tourist to the city is Reichstag, the . The Berlin Wall, or rather the stretch of the Wall still left intact is also a major attraction for the visitors, along with the Berlin Wall Memorial and the newly opened ‘Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe’.

Berlin is also home to several festivals, parades and plays host to various theatre houses, cinemas and concerts. The shopping buffs should pay a visit to Ku’Damm and Friedrichstraße; both the shopping areas have that old world charm about them and the staff are extremely helpful. German cuisines are quite sumptuous and surprisingly inexpensive - the staple currywurst is a must try with falafels perfect for vegetarians. The inhabitants of Berlin are also active on the social scene - clubs, pubs and bars are found aplenty in Berlin.

In short, a visit to the largest city of Germany is bound to be relaxing, refreshing and rejuvenating.
